Running For Office: Setting a Goal

          Contributed by National Officers

Running for National Office was one of the scariest things that I have ever done. Speaking in front of a whole room of my peers? Being interviewed by Voting Delegates from each state? Being interviewed by members of the Board of Trustees and members of the National Staff? Talk about nerves! As I was thinking about running, I was a little overwhelmed by the entire process.  However, I knew that my adviser, my local chapter, and my state association had my back.

Have you ever had a goal? After attending my first National Leadership Conference, I discovered that I had a new one. I knew that I wanted to represent the Post-Secondary division. I wanted to be involved in planning an amazing NLC, be a voice for our members, and be a representative of Business Professionals of America. So, I started working on that goal. I stepped up in my local chapter.  I worked hard to gain my Ambassador Torch Award. I nervously asked my state and local advisors for letters of recommendation and filled out and mailed in my application. I anxiously watched my e-mail to see if I was approved to run. I picked an amazing campaign manager who helped me come up with ideas for the campaign rally. And I did it! I performed in my interviews, gave my speech, tried my best, and was elected as the 2012-2013 Secretary/Treasurer for the Post-Secondary Division.

I thought my mind was racing and my nerves were all over the place just running for an office.  But now the real questions began to surface. What adventure I had just signed on for? What was in store for me in the coming year? What kind of responsibilities would I have? And just like that all of my questions were answered in July at the National Officer Training in Columbus, Ohio. I met nine of the most amazing individuals, from all over the country, who will be serving as your National Officer Team.  We brainstormed ideas, set goals, and developed a program of work for the year, but most importantly, we became a team.

My service to Business Professionals of America is now continuing from my chapter and state to serving as your National Officer representative, and my new role has just begun.  Our journey together to Orlando, FL will be paved with hard work and many rewards along the way.  I look forward to interacting with you on Facebook and Twitter, and working with the other National Officers to make the 2013 NLC the best one yet. I hope to see you in Orlando, Florida!
