A new school year has just begun and I anticipate that you are all getting settled into your school routine. As Business Professionals of America starts up again, I hope that you are all preparing for this exciting year and busily recruiting new members for your chapter. For me personally, I am very excited for this year and what it brings. As you think about the months ahead, I would like to encourage all of you to start setting your goals for this upcoming year. Whether you set goals in BPA, school, or in your personal life, I suggest that you create them. Write them down, hang them somewhere that you can see them every day, and remind yourself what you are trying to achieve. It has been said, "A goal without a plan is just a wish". Every new school year gives us opportunities to achieve more and to become better. If you have already set those objectives this year, continue to work on them. If you are still working on some from last year, that is great. Don’t give up! The idea of setting goals is to create an achievement that we are willing to work hard for in order to be successful. We each might encounter failure or challenges along the way. Failure will come naturally and it is important that you don’t stop because of it, but that you grow from it. J.K. Rowling said, “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.” Look to grow from your failures. If you encounter a brick wall in your path, I encourage you to follow the words of Randy Pausch that he gave in his famous speech, “The Last Lecture". He said, "The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough.” If you want something bad enough, and are willing to work for it, you can get through those brick walls. I hope that we can each take the time to explore the goals that we want to set for this year, make a plan by writing our goals down, work hard on them and then enjoy the sweet success of accomplishing them! Remember to promote BPA in your local school and good luck in your fall chapter activities.
