BPA Students Attend Business Career Days

          Contributed by Newton High School

The Newton High School BPA chapter received a unique opportunity to attend the Emporia State University Business Career Day for the fourth year in a row. On November 7, sixteen members listened to a variety of speakers lecture on their respective field of business and the opportunities that their field has yet to come. Topics included Entrepreneurship, Career Exploration, Management, and Financial Careers. One special topic included a business simulation where students learned the basics of running a business in a time span of about 30 minutes. Newton's BPA treasurer Trevor Duerksen said "It showed us how difficult it is to actually run a real business. We worked on purchasing, pricing, marketing, and advertising for a merchandising business." The career day not only explained the different types of business but also helped to set the students up for success in their future careers. Two members from Newton High School participated in a very important lecture on proper business professional attire. Katie Brenneman and Chloe Denno both modeled business suits on stage in front of a large audience to demonstrate what to wear in a business work environment. Snacks were provided in the middle of the seminar which gave students from different schools the opportunity to chat and refuel before heading back to the lectures.  After the seminar concluded, the group went to eat lunch at Golden Corral as a bonding activity before getting on the bus and heading back home.

In addition to attending the business career day at Emporia State University, five BPA members visited Wichita Area Technical College on November 13. They toured two campuses and learned about the opportunities that are available to students. WATC provides a wide variety of degrees such as medical and manufacturing courses.
