Local Officers Train Upcoming BPA Members

          Contributed by Newton High School

Newton High School's BPA chapter has a large amount of seniors that hold office positions for the group. As leaders they know that in order to continue the success of the beloved program, new members must have an idea of what roles they will have to fill the following years. In order to teach these members what kind of tasks the officers have to complete for BPA, the current officers each chose a student to mentor this past year. The officer's mentors were asked to come to meetings that were held outside of school to help with planning of various events such as a chartiy dodgeball tournament and a valentines day fundraiser. Mentees were allowed to watch as well as interact in all of the meetings. Kassidy Thompson, sophomore BPA member said, "I think that it was very beneficial for us because it gives us real life experience on the roles we will have to fill next year. We are a very involved club and it takes a lot of responsibility to make everything run smoothly."

Mentees had to test their leadership skills during the actual chapter meetings as well. They helped to remind members of meeting dates and then relay important messages during meetings with their small groups. This is Newton High's first year to start this mentor program in BPA and members hope that it shows the importance of strong leadership skills in real life situations. Senior chapter President Ashlynn Hamm gladly stated, "I think we have chosen a great group to help take our positions next year. Our only goal is ensure that the BPA continues to be a success at Newton High School for many more years to come."
