Local BPA Chapter Proudly Installs Two State Officers

          Contributed by Newton High School

On October 23, Newton High School's BPA chapter loaded the school bus and made their way to the beautiful campus of Kansas University. Two local officers, Trevor Duerksen and Colton Aarstad, both shared nerves as they prepared to give their speech at the Kansas BPA Fall Delegate Assembly. Both of these members were running for State Office positions. This was local chapter Vice President Colton Aarstads second time runnning for a position, however, this time he was aiming a little higher than his previous position as Treasurer. "I learned a lot my first year as a State Officer and I felt that I could put all of that knowledge to good use this next year," said Aarstad. This year, Aarstad focused on creating statewide opportunities for members to earn Torch Points.

Trevor Duerksen has been a member of BPA for three consecutive years and also made the decision to run for State Office. His platform was mainly based around the idea of forming more unity between chapters in the state of Kansas. "My main goal was to make it so instead of having Maize High's chapter and Newton High and Peabody-Burns, we have Kansas BPA. I wanted better communication throughout all of Kansas."  said Duerksen. "Running for Office was a great way to give back to the club that has given me so much."

After speeches were given and vote was held, both Trevor and Colton received good news. Colton Aarstad was installed as the new Kansas BPA State President and Trevor Duerksen was titled as the Kansas BPA State Historian.  The two officers had a successful year in creating more unity throughout all of Kansas and also between Kansas and the National Office. At the Kansas State Leadership Conference two National Officers, Jake Adams and Jason Marshall, came to visit Kansas and all of its BPA members. Many Newton High chapter members had the chance to visit with these two important officials. Megan Regier, local chapter Historian said "I enjoyed having the opportunity to get to know Jason. He was friendly and had a lot of good insight on BPA topics, he also gave us some good advice for the National Competition." While at KU, Newton members shared lunch with all of the other chapters and participated in leadership activities before heading home for the day.
