February 20 through the 22nd were very busy days for Kansas BPA members. The Kansas State Leadership Conference commenced at two in the afternoon with the Opening Ceremonies. Newton BPA members swarmed around the doors waiting to rush in and grab the the front row seats while their two State Officers prepared to initiate the conference. As Trevor Duerksen and Colton Aarstad called the meeting to order, Newton members waited in anticipation to hear the motivational speaker. This year youth motivational speaker Laymon Hicks delivered a very important message to the competitors. He spoke about the importance of initiative and determination. He told students that the only way to achieve something is "To get up, get out, and go get it." Although he was not much older than the majority of those that were listening, Hicks relayed a powerful message to the students while using humor to entertain. Newton chapter member Chloe Denno said "He kept us all on our toes because we never knew what his next move was going to be. He made me laugh but at the same time I really felt that we all learned the importance of going out and achieving our own goals."

After the ceremony concluded, BPA members were bussed to their competition locations at West High School of Wichita. While there, students competed in a variety of computer events including Medical Office Procedures and Word Processing Skills. After a long night of challenges, members returned back to Newton for the night. Early the next morning however, Newton was back at it again. Friday's competitions consisted mainly of presentations and speeches. Chloe Denno worked with chapter member Alyssa Gaede to prepare a group research paper over an economical topic. After delivering their speech Gaede added "We had a challenging topic but it really caused us to think and challenged us to combine both of our strengths as a group." Later that evening several students returned to Wichita to attend the BPA Social event at the Doubletree Hotel. Saturday morning was the last day of the competition for Kansas BPA members and it ended with big celebration. All of the competitors gathered to fnd out the top placers in each event. Newton alone had 23 students place in at least one event. Out of those 23 members a total of 37 placements and 13 that plan to attend the National Leadership Conference. Members received feedback from their events and hope to better themselves for their next competitions.
