Newton High School's BPA Treasurer Report

          Contributed by Newton High School

At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year Newton High School's BPA chapter started off with a balance of $1,712.47 in its account. The chapter Treasurer, Trevor Duerksen worked with advisor Melinda Rangel to create different fundraising events for the members in order to help offset some of the costs of BPA. One ongoing fundraiser is Newton High's school store that is open every morning and lunch period. The store consists of a large closable cabinet that is opened and ran by BPA members. The stores biggest seller is chewing gum along with school supplies and other needs. The gum is purchased at the local Walmart and Dillons by Mrs. Rangel. "I am always looking for sales on gum and comparing prices to get the best deal," she stated.

Duerksen also helps to organize a large fundraiser every year. This fundraiser is Powder Puff Football that is held in November each year. BPA charges admission as well as a $10 fee to all of the players that participate. Teams are divided by class and each of the four teams wear a different colored T-shirt. Duerksen stated "This is one of our biggest fundraisers that we do and it helps to pay for some of our National Leadership Conference expenses. Not only is it a great way to earn money for our chapter but it also a fun way for students to bond."

Newton High School BPA does a great job of fundraising but not all of the profits are for keeping. Each year the chapter hosts a dodgeball tournament that benefits a local community member in need. As always the dodgeball tournament was a success. It raised over $900 that was donated to NHS student Calla Potluri who suffered from a severe head injury. Duerksen played a large role in making all of these fundraisers run smoothly as well as several other events.
