Idaho State University Chapter Business Clothing Drive

        2/3/2012
        Contributed by Idaho State University

The Idaho State University chapter of Business Professionals of America recently raised over $1000 worth of professional clothing for South Eastern Idaho Community Action Agency.

South Eastern Idaho Community Action Agency (SEICAA) is a non-profit agency that serves the South Eastern region of Idaho. They provide services such as energy assistance, rental housing, meals on wheels, and weatherization to low income families. They also provide community services such as family development, food and nutrition programs, and providing free personal hygiene products.

Another service that SEICAA provides to the community is a 'working closet.' The working closet is available to low income families for the purpose of finding and keeping a job by providing them with professional clothing. When the ISU chapter of Business Professionals of America heard that SEICAA provided this service, they knew they could help. After all, who would know the importance of looking professional better than the Business Professionals of America?

The chapter gathered clothing from college professors and students. When the Region 8 secondary students joined them for their annual Fall Leadership Conference, they asked the students to bring donations, and were surprised at the amount of clothing they were able to raise for their community.

The clothing that the chapter raised will be distributed to low income members of the community that are seeking new or better employment. There are members of the community that have the skills and qualifications for some of the jobs that are available, but without a good first impression at an interview, they would be unlikely to get hired.

The Idaho State chapter was pleased to work with SECIAA to raise clothing for their community. Shayla Jackson-Martin, Chapter President, said "It is so important to help people in our community. By providing people with an outfit that they feel professional in, by making them feel like a million bucks, they will be more confident when seeking employment, and more likely to succeed at it."

Kati Trelion, the manager of the working closet for SECIAA, discussed how important the working closet is to the community. "The working closet provides opportunities. It gives people the opportunity to put their best foot forward in a job interview."
