Christmas songs played on the radio, presents began making their appearance under the Christmas tree, houses were decorated in lights and wreaths, and students started getting restless as Christmas break grew near. As society prepared for the holiday season, Business Professionals of America members decided to bring the Christmas spirit to Newton High School as well.

The members invited Santa Clause himself to Newton High School for pictures with students. A substitute teacher equipped with a real “Santa beard” posed as Santa and sat on his rocking chair on December 14 and 15 during lunch. A picture backdrop of a fireplace with stockings hung in a row was painted and presents placed around his chair to create a more picturesque scene for the holiday snapshot.

Ten BPA members helped in several ways, some taking pictures, others working the table, and even more delivering pictures. Students were asked to pay $1 each to have a picture with Santa. This event brought in $92 for the BPA chapter, not to mention the excitement of Christmas to the school. “It brought in more money than I had expected,” BPA member Carla Gonzalez said. “I’m glad it was able to help the chapter.”

In an effort to recognize our partnership with the Special Olympics and other special needs students, pictures were donated to the special needs students at NHS. The ten excited students posed with “Santa,” sharing their happiness with the BPA members working the event and spreading the Christmas cheer even more. “It was a lot of fun seeing how happy the students were just from taking a picture with Santa,” Gonzalez said. “It was great watching seeing them smile like that. I’m glad I was able to help spread the Christmas spirit with the school, and these kids made it even more rewarding.”

10 students organized and worked the Santa picture event and donated pictures to special needs students - 10 x 3 = 30 hours
