You are correct. You can get all the education in the world, but some things are only learned by running the business.

This is not a realistic viewpoint. Some things have to be learned by the experience of actually running the business.

Entrepreneurial Skills

In addition to having a passion for your work and determination to accomplish your goals, starting a business requires specific entrepreneurial skills.  You may not currently have all the abilities you need, but the good news is that many of these skills can be developed as your company grows. Four basic skills you will need in order to run a successful business are:

  1. Sales and Marketing: One of your main tasks as a business owner will be to identify your target customers and develop a comprehensive marketing strategy.  Most of all, you must develop good skills in communication, negotiation, and persuasion in order to be an effective sales representative for your company.
  2. Financial Management: If you want to stay in business, you have to be able to ring the cash register and manage cash flow. It is also vitally important to know how to price your product correctly and keep expenses under control.
  3. Administrative Abilities:  As an entrepreneur, you will wear many hats. Two of the most important administrative skills you’ll need are record keeping (or accounting) and human resource management. You will also need adequate computer skills and a good sense of organization.
  4. Time Management: No one will make you go to work. You must be self-disciplined enough to make your business plan work, and you must know how to manage time and prioritize your tasks.

In addition to these four general business skills, to be competitive in today’s marketplace you will need highly-developed skills in your specific field of business. For example, if you start a restaurant, you’ll need training in food services, food safety, restaurant management, and possibly catering. Whether you design jewelry, cut hair, paint houses, kill bugs, repair cars, prepare tax returns, or give facials, you must strive to become the top person in your field if you want to grow your business and ultimately become a major corporation.
