Your Slice of the Pie It is easy to see that market share is a good way to express the percentage of the “pie” your company controls. The whole market is the pie, and your market share is your “slice” of the pie. Potential investors look for businesses that are focused on increasing market share. When a company increases its market share, it is said to be increasing its “penetration” of the market. If your goal is to grow a company large enough to go public, the principles of market demand, market share, and market penetration are vitally important to consider right now while you are developing your business concept and beginning to lay the foundation for building the company. One of the first things Jeff Bezos did when he got the idea for Amazon.com in 1994 was to conduct careful market research and estimate the size of the market.
